While Jos DisCos is to remit N72b within 60 days to government coffers, Kano DisCos is to pay N40.7b
The House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has directed the Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC) to pay N72 billion to the federal government account within 60 days and Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) to pay N40.7 billion within 30 days.
The resolution followed a public hearing in Abuja on Wednesday, chaired by Rep. Bamidele Salam (PDP Osun), as part of the committee’s ongoing investigation into multi-trillion naira debts owed to the federal government by electricity distribution companies (DisCos).
This follows a review of the 2021 report of the Auditor-General of the Federation and documents submitted by the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading (NBET) Plc.
According to documents submitted by the NBET, Jos DisCo’s indebtedness stood at N161.7 billion as of September 30, 2020. However, the company admitted to owing N72 billion as of May 30, 2025. NBET, on its part, placed the reconciled debt at N98.7 billion, leaving a N26.7 billion discrepancy between both parties.
Following deliberations, the committee directed Jos DisCo to pay the admitted N72 billion within 60 days, while both NBET and the company were given 21 days to reconcile the outstanding balance and report back.
Salam stressed the need for strict compliance, warning that the government would no longer condone financial indiscipline within the power sector.
“This is public money, and the federal government urgently needs these funds to fulfill its obligations. We expect full compliance and accountability,” he said.
In a related directive, the committee also ordered KEDCO to remit N40.7 billion representing 50 percent of its verified debt within 30 days.
NBET had initially put KEDCO’s debt at N211.7 billion, but after reconciliation, the figure was reduced to N85.8 billion. The company, led by Engr. Hussani Sadiq, acknowledged a verified indebtedness of N81.5 billion, with N4.3 billion still in dispute.
The committee instructed KEDCO to provide evidence of payment within the 30-day deadline and reconcile the disputed amount within 21 days.
