Reps turn search light on security intervention funds

The House of Representatives has launched an investigation into all security intervention funds released by the Federal Government from 2020 to date, with a pledge to ensure transparency, accountability, and fiscal discipline in the management of resources meant to protect Nigerians.

Chairman of the ad-hoc committee on the expenditure of all intervention funds on security, Rep. Zakaria Nyampa, disclosed this at the inauguration of the committee on Thursday at the National Assembly.

Nyampa explained that the probe became necessary due to the widening gap between the huge budgetary allocations to the security sector and the persistent wave of insecurity across the country.

This is not a witch-hunt,” he clarified. “Our duty is to ensure that every naira released for security serves its purpose to safeguard lives and property.”

According to him, the investigation will cover all intervention heads, special allocations, and procurement processes carried out by beneficiary agencies. The committee will also assess the impact of such expenditures on security outcomes nationwide.

We are determined to follow the money with diligence, objectivity, and patriotism,” Rep. Nyampa added.

To ensure credibility and openness, he said the committee would collaborate with key institutions, including the Ministry of Finance, the Budget Office, the Office of the National Security Adviser, the defence and police authorities, as well as anti-graft agencies like the EFCC and ICPC.

Civil society watchdogs such as BudgIT, CISLAC, and SERAP will also be engaged in the process.

Transparency is the backbone of good governance,” the chairman noted, warning that mismanagement of funds meant for security has dire consequences for national stability.

When money meant to secure our nation is diverted, the cost is not just in naira and kobo — it’s in human lives. We owe it to Nigerians to get this right,” he said, assuring that the committee’s report will strengthen security governance and restore public trust.

Earlier, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Abbas Tajudeen, reaffirmed the chamber’s commitment to accountability and probity in the utilization of all security intervention funds.

Abbas, represented by the Deputy Chief Whip, Rep. Ibrahim Isiaka, said the creation of the committee reflects the House’s unwavering resolve to promote transparency in national security spending.

He charged the committee members to uphold the House’s core values of accountability, effectiveness, and fairness in the course of their assignment.

The speaker also commended the committee chairman for his leadership, urging him and his team to “carry out the assignment with integrity and diligence.”
