The House of Representatives on Thursday announced significant changes to its standing committees while creating two new ones.

The newly established committees are the House Committee on South West Development Commission (SWDC) and the North Central Development Commission (NCDC).

Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, who made the announcement, disclosed that Rep. Akeem Adeyemi (APC Oyo), and Rep. Tunji Olawuyi ( APC Kwara), will chair the South West and North Central Development Commissions, respectively. They will be assisted by Rep. Clement Akani (PDP Osun) and Rep. Donald Ojogo (APC Ondo).

According to the Speaker, the creation of the new committees followed the signing into law of bills establishing the regional commissions, emphasizing the need for effective oversight of their activities.

Additionally, adjustments were made to some existing committees. Rep. Isiaka Nasir Adegboyega (APC Ogin), now heads the House Committee on National Planning, replacing the former chairman Rep. Isiaka Ibrahim (APC Ogun), who was recently appointed Deputy Chief Whip of the House.

Other changes include Rep. Abiodun Akinlade (APC Ogun) taking over as the Chairman House Committee on Agricultural Services, while Rep. Tolulope Akande-Sadipe (APC Oyo), Rep. Mustapha Ghali (NNPP Kano), Rep. Garba Saleh Zock (APC Kaduna), and Rep. Tajudeen Kareem Abisodun (APC Oyo), now chair the Committees on Humanitarian Services, Ethics and Privileges, Culture, and Aviation Technology, respectively.

In a historic move, the Speaker announced that February 13 will henceforth be observed annually as Murtala Mohammed Day in honour of the late former Head of State, General Murtala Mohammed.

The Speaker in his letter read said that today February 13th marks the 39 years of omer head of state’s death. To mark the occasion, the House held a minute of silence in his memory.
