The resumption of senate plenary was postponed to May 6 to allow senators engage with constituents during the workers’ day holiday in the first week of May.
The senate has announced a shift in the date for the resumption of its plenary sittings, moving it from the earlier scheduled Tuesday, April 29, 2025, to a new date, Tuesday, May 6, 2025.
This development was communicated via an internal memo dated April 20, 2025, and addressed to all senators. The notice was signed by the Clerk of the Senate, Andrew Ogbonna Nwoba.
According to the memo, the adjustment was necessitated by the need to allow senators spend more time with their constituents during the public holiday marking International Workers’ Day, observed on May 1, and to facilitate deeper constituency engagement in the first week of May.
The full text of the memo reads:
“Distinguished Senators,
“I am directed to inform you that the resumption of plenary sittings of the Senate, earlier scheduled for Monday 29th, April 2025, has been rescheduled to Tuesday, 6th May 2025.
“This postponement is made to allow Distinguished Senators, stay with their constituents, during the International Workers’ Day public holiday, in the first week of May, and to further enhance constituency engagements.
“Distinguished Senators are kindly requested to take note of this postponement, while regretting any inconvenience, the change might have caused.”
Parliament Reports recalls that the senate had previously adjourned plenary on Thursday, March 27, 2025, following a motion moved shortly before the Easter and Eid Fitr holidays. At the time, lawmakers had agreed to reconvene on April 29 to resume legislative activities after the two major religious festivities.
However, with the latest shift, the upper chamber will now remain in recess for an additional week, bringing the total duration of the break to nearly six weeks.
