President Tinubu has signed bills establishing three tertiary institution in the south-east into law
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed into law two bills sponsored by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, establishing Federal College of Education, Bende, Abia State and the Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences, Item Bende, Abia State into law.
This was revealed in a statement by Levinus Nwabughiogu, the Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Speaker on Tuesday.
Additionally, the President equally signed into law a bill for the act to establish a Federal University Okigwe, Imo State.
The newly signed legislations aim to expand access to quality tertiary education, enhance research capacity, and meet the academic and developmental needs of the region.
The Federal College of Education, Bende is mandated to provide full-time courses and training in technology, applied sciences, commerce, arts, social sciences, humanities, and management. It will also undertake relevant research and is empowered to appoint a provost and other officials for effective administration and student discipline.
On its part, the Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences, Item, will focus on delivering top-tier medical education and healthcare training across undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The institution will also engage in cutting-edge research in medical sciences and health policy aimed at improving healthcare delivery and public health outcomes.
Meanwhile, the Federal University, Okigwe, though not sponsored by Rep. Kalu, is a product of his sustained advocacy for increased federal presence in the south-east, especially in the education sector.
Reacting to the presidential assent, Kalu expressed deep appreciation to President Tinubu for the gesture, as well as to the Senate, his colleagues in the House of Representatives, and Nigerians for their support.
“The establishment of the institutions marks a significant milestone in promoting education and development in the region.” Rep. Kalu said
He called on the people of the south-east to continue supporting the Tinubu administration, assuring them of more democracy dividends in the days ahead
