Reps urge FG to prioritise girls child education

The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to prioritise education, protection, and leadership opportunities for girls, especially those in crisis-affected communities, as part of activities marking the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child.

The motion, moved under matters of urgent public importance by Rep. Kafilat Ogbara, Chairman of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, drew attention to this year’s theme: “The Girl: I Am the Change — I Lead Girls on the Frontlines of Crisis.”

Ogbara noted that the annual commemoration, celebrated globally on October 11, recognises the resilience, strength, and leadership of girls, particularly those navigating conflict, disaster, or public health emergencies.

“This year’s theme acknowledges that girls are not merely victims of adversity; they are powerful agents of change who possess the potential to shape their future and their communities,” she stated.

The lawmaker stressed that girls play vital roles in society and possess unique perspectives that can drive meaningful change and sustainable development. However, she lamented that in times of crisis, girls often face heightened risks of violence, exploitation, and discrimination, which can derail their education and hinder their personal development.

“Despite these challenges, many girls have emerged as leaders in their communities, advocating for their rights and those of others. They are using their voices to demand change and inspire action,” Ogbara added.

Adopting the motion, the House therefore urged the Federal Government to Prioritise education and skills development for girls, especially in crisis-prone regions;

The House also directed security agencies and relevant stakeholders to implement measures protecting girls from violence and exploitation;

It also mandated the Ministry of Women Affairs to create safe spaces and provide mental health support for girls coping with trauma and to partner with NGOs and other stakeholders to design mentorship and leadership training programmes for girls.

The motion also mandated the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development to ensure compliance and follow-up implementation.
