The Senate has appointed Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu (APC, Abia north) as chairman of the newly established South East Development Commission (SEDC) committee while Sen. Ken Eze (APC, Ebonyi Central) was appointed as the vice chairman.
The announcement was made by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, during Tuesday’s plenary. Prior to the appointment, the senate president mentioned that President Bola Tinubu had just assented to some bills establishing the regional development commissions.
Recall that Sen. Kalu prior to his new appointment, chaired the senate committee on privatisation as well as the ad-hoc screening committee on the regional development commissions for the north-west and south-east.

In the same vein, Senators Titus Zam (APC, Benue north-west) and Isah Jibrin (APC, Kogi east) were appointed chairman and deputy chairman of the senate committee on the North Central Development Commission (NCDC) respectively.
Akpabio noted that the new chairman for the committee on rules and business previously chaired by Sen. Zam will be announced on the next legislative day. He also mentioned that other members of the committees will be announced in due course.
Also, Sen. Babangida Hussaini (APC, Jigawa north-west) and Sen. Muntari Dandutse (APC, Katsina south) have been appointed to serve as chairman and deputy chairman of the committee on the North West Development Commission (NWDC).
Other reshuffling made were the leadership of some standing committees which include Sen. Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central) as the chairman, senate committee on Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Sen. Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi central), who previously chaired the committee on local content has now been appointed to chair the committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations while Sen. Joel Onowakpo (APC, Delta South) will now chair the committee on local content.
Sen. Victor Umeh (LP, Anambra Central) has also been reassigned from the Diaspora Committee and will now serve as the chairman of the committee on national identity card and national population.
