The National Assembly adjourned plenary resumption to June 24 to allow members celebrate midterm with constituentsÂ
The National Assembly has postponed the resumption of plenary sessions from the earlier scheduled date of June 17 to June 24, 2025.
Both chambers had adjourned on May 28, 2025, to allow for the Sallah festivities and Democracy Day celebrations, with plans to reconvene on June 17.
However, a new resumption date was announced on Thursday during the joint session of the National Assembly held to mark Democracy Day.
Presiding over the joint sitting, Senate President Godswill Akpabio explained that although lawmakers were commemorating their two years in office on June 12, the 10th Assembly officially marks its second anniversary on June 13.
In light of this, the Senate President said the postponement would allow lawmakers ample time to celebrate the milestone with their constituents.
“I want to thank my distinguished colleagues for turning out for this joint session. Initially, I was concerned about the possibility of not forming a quorum, but you have made the sacrifice to be present,” Akpabio stated.
Following his remarks, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele moved a motion for the adjournment of the joint session, which was seconded by House Leader, Rep. Julius Ihonvbere. The motion was put to a voice vote and adopted by the majority.
With that, the Senate President formally adjourned the joint sitting.
