With late deputy chief whip’s seat, the vacant seats in the House of Representatives has risen to five

10th National Assembly members from Ogun State

The House of Representatives has declared the seat of late deputy chief whip, Rep. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, vacant.

Parliament Reports recalls that Onanuga, who represented Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo north federal constituency of Ogun state, died on January 15, 2025, after a brief illness.

Citing session 68(2) of the 1999 constitution during Wednesday’s plenary, the Speaker of the House Rep. Tajudeen Abbas declared the seat vacant.

This announcement brings the number of vacant seats in the House of Representatives to five for which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is expected to conduct by-elections to fill.

Three seats became vacant after the death of Rep. Ekene Adams (Kaduna), Rep. Olaide Akinyemi Akinremi (Oyo) and Rep. Isah Dogonyaro (Jigawa) while Rep. Dennis Idahosa who represented Ovia North East/Ovia north west federal constituency of Edo state seat became vacant following his election as deputy governor.
