The House of Representatives has mandated the Nigeria Police Force and the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) to urgently collaborate in identifying and arresting vehicles using fake plate numbers across the country.

The House also urged the FRSC in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force to ensure that only vehicles with registered plate numbers are found in the Nigeria vehicle registration database.

The resolutions followed a motion of urgent public importance raised by Rep. Matthew Nwogu (LP Imo), during plenary on Thursday.

Presenting the motion, Rep. Nwogu emphasized that vehicle plate numbers are critical for the identification of vehicles and assist security agencies in tracing vehicles suspected of involvement in criminal activities.

Quoting a media report dated February 7, 2025, Rep. Nwogu referred to claims made by the Lagos State Sector Commander of the FRSC that many fake number plates used for crimes in the country bear the tags of reputable institutions such as the Presidency, Nigeria Youth Council (NYC), and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), among others.

He noted that the majority of plate numbers with the tag of reputable institutions are not registered in the Nigeria vehicle registration database.

During the debate, Rep. Nwogu expressed grave concerns over the link between fake number plates and heinous crimes such as “one chance” robbery and kidnapping, which have claimed lives and caused severe harm to unsuspecting victims.

With the current state of insecurity in Nigeria, there is an urgent need to crack down on the use of fake plate numbers, which pose a significant security threat to citizens,” Nwogu stated.

Consequently, the House has mandated its committee on the FRSC to ensure urgent compliance and report back within four weeks for further legislative action.
