Sen. Bamidele moved a motion for the senate to go into executive session to discuss the Rivers.state of emergency declaration
The senate has entered a closed-door session to deliberate on President Bola Tinubu’s proclamation of emergency rule in Rivers state and the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
This development followed the reading of President Tinubu’s official letter by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Thursday’s plenary session.
Shortly after the correspondence was read, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele invoked Order 135 of the Senate Standing Rules and moved a motion for the chamber to go into executive session to discuss the sensitive matter.

The President’s letter, titled “Gazette of State of Emergency Proclamation 2025, Rivers State,” was formally submitted to the Senate for consideration. In the letter, President Tinubu stated: “In compliance with the permissions of Section 305 (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended, I hereby forward for the Constitution of the Senate, copies of the official gazettes of the State of Emergency Proclamation 2025.
“The main features of the Proclamation are as follows: A declaration of the State of Emergency in one State of the Federation, namely, Rivers State, the suspension from office of the Governor, his Deputy, and all members of the State House of Assembly, an appointment of Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd) as Administrator to administer the State subject to any instruction or regulation as may from time to time be issued by me.
“While I look forward to the expeditious consideration of the Senate, please accept the assurances of my highest consideration.”
