Tax Reforms: Senate adjourns, embarks on three-day retreat for expert consultation

The senate has reiterated its dedication to a comprehensive review of all submissions on the tax reform bills, emphasising the need for thorough scrutiny and stakeholder engagement.

To advance this effort, the senate committee on finance has scheduled a three-day retreat for consultations with experts. The committee’s chairman, Sen. Sani Musa (APC, Niger east), announced this during a press briefing on Tuesday.

Following Tuesday’s plenary session, the senate adjourned until Wednesday, March 5, 2025, to allow adequate time for necessary legislative activities on the reform bills. Sen. Musa explained that the retreat is aimed at ensuring the proposed legislation is both practical and aligned with national interests.

The committee  is expected to engage with the Office of the Attorney General to verify that the reforms do not conflict with constitutional provisions.

He said, “We are committed to delivering a tax law that works for the country. Every presentation is being carefully considered, and after today’s session, we will embark on a three-day retreat.

“We will consult with experts and the Office of the Attorney General to ensure that the final legislation aligns with constitutional requirements and serves the best interests of Nigerians,” he added.

Musa further noted that the legislation should have long-term impact, stressing, “This law must endure beyond our tenure as lawmakers. We will be held accountable by the laws we enact. Our priority is to ensure that Nigerians view this tax system as fair, effective, and reflective of their needs.”
